Finding Your Business Options Even During Turmoil
Some of the best and most enlightening business moves can come to you by what appear to be obstacles in your way. Learn to look at your obstacles differently. My most creative moments usually happened when my back was against a wall. I call it my Jean Luce Pecard mode. Jean Luce is the captain of the Enterprise in Star Treks' Next Generation series, and as he stands on the bridge; an alien is seen on the view screen and has just threatened to blow up the ship. Jeane Luce orders, "View screen down," then stands back, and announces "Options?" I love this picture. I try to see it in my head every time an obstacle wants to take me by the throat and strangle the very life out of me.
"Options?" What is interesting is to really look at the characters on the bridge in this scene and how they reply. Each character seems to be a different portion of our own psyche. Warf, the head of security, wants to blow them up before they blow up the Enterprise. Will Richer, second in command and referred to often as number one, which, in my opinion is a wonderful way to be referred to, always gives a very safe answer. Data is an android and gives a very factual reply. Wesley, the young enson, is a prodigy and gives that young adolescent, intellectual, but naive reply and finally Deana Troy is empathic and feels the emotions involved.
The bridge is filled with different personalities of ourselves. When we have our back against the wall don't get caught in the negative talk and the, "Oh, woe is me." First breathe, hold your cool and then ask, "Options?" If you have trouble seeing your options, why not ask someone else to review the situation, if the captain of the Enterprise can do it, so can you.
